Listen for time or sound
A long wait between interview answers is a timing problem. Hiss behind every answer is a noise problem. Both can occur in one recording, but removing the waits does not remove the hiss that remains under the voice.
Before choosing a tool, describe the change you want: fewer seconds between sentences, or less background sound during those sentences. This distinction prevents aggressive silence settings from being used as a substitute for noise treatment.

Do not raise the threshold until speech disappears
A higher threshold may select more material, but it cannot distinguish a person’s soft speech from unwanted sound. If background noise keeps a pause above threshold, inspect the source and the purpose of the edit rather than repeatedly increasing the setting.
Listen to joins after shortening pauses. Abrupt transitions between noisy speech and a cut can sound unnatural. Keep a little space where it supports the recording, or restore a selected section entirely.

Will silence removal fix microphone hiss?
It may remove some time containing hiss, but it does not remove hiss from the speech you keep.
