Choose an audio format for voice recordings

Choose a voice-recording format for sharing, playback or further editing. Compare AudioCut outputs and understand size estimates before converting.

Choose for the next step: a compressed format can be convenient for sharing, while PCM WAV may fit another editing app. Check the destination’s accepted formats first. Converting a compressed recording to a larger format does not restore lost detail.

Start with where the file is going

Ask whether the next person needs to listen, edit or import the audio into a particular service. Follow that destination’s requirements instead of assuming one extension is best everywhere.

Keep the original recording as your source. Make the delivery version separately, especially if you may need another edit later. Changing sample rate or selecting a larger format should serve a concrete requirement, not a promise of better source quality.

Estimate size without calling it a measured result

For a nominal 192 kbps stream lasting 60 seconds, 192,000 × 60 ÷ 8 gives about 1,440,000 bytes, or 1.44 decimal MB, before container details. Actual file sizes can differ with encoding behavior and overhead.

For 16-bit PCM at 48 kHz, a 60-second mono signal contains 48,000 × 60 × 2 = 5,760,000 bytes of sample data. Stereo doubles that. The WAV header adds more bytes. These are formula examples, not benchmarks of AudioCut output.

Listen and test the exported file

Convert, open the result in the intended app and listen to the start, middle and end. Check that the channel choice and duration make sense. If a browser cannot preview a successfully encoded format, test the download in a compatible player.

For a voice recording made with one microphone, duplicating a mono channel into stereo does not create new spatial information. Likewise, a higher sample rate cannot recreate frequencies missing from the source.

Questions about this task

Is WAV always the highest-quality choice?

It can store PCM audio, but the result is still limited by the source and output settings. Converting MP3 to WAV does not restore the original pre-compression recording.

Will conversion always make the file smaller?

No. Duration, codec, bitrate, channels and output format affect size. Check the actual result.
